c.8 SABINE'S GULLS (6-9 birds, 1 adult). A plethora of sightings from all seawatching locations throughout the day. many birds were stopping and resting on the sea for quite some times at various locations, making recording accurate numbers difficult, but at a very minimum 8 birds were involved. The following is thought to be a likely sequence: 1 west past the NOA at 9:15am (R.R, M.Br); 1 west past the NOA at 12:08pm and past Gore Point at c. 12:30pm (C.D.R, R.R); 2 past the NOA at 1:30pm, picked up distantly to the west and presumably part of the group of 4 that flew past Gore Point mid-afternoon (C.D.R et. al.); 2 east past the golf course and later lingering of Gore Point (C.D.R et. al.) Of course the 2 past the NOA may not have been part of the group of four of Gore Point and the 2 past the golf-course may have been earlier birds doubling back etc, but 8 birds seems a reasonable assumption.

Also 114 Great Skuas, 44 Arctic Skuas, 28 Manx Shearwaters, 3 Kittiwakes, 3 Arctic Terns and 3 skua sp. past during the day.

1 Pied Flycatcher in the sycamore near the NOA obs.

1 female Redstart by the NOA heligoland trap.

WRYNECK at the north end of the Forestry and the Gore Point dunes. Originally the bird was found by two visitors in the dense buckthorn at the Gore Point dunes (next to the sign), where it disappeared having been seen by a handful of people. The bird was relocated at 10:18pm when it was flushed just across the coastal path at the north end of the Forestry (C.H.M.) before being seen in flight and briefly on the side of an elder shortly after (c. 10:20am) in the same location (C.D.R, R.R.). The bird was then seen on the actual coastal path between these locations around midday (R.R. et. al.), before banking low back into the dense sea buckthorn where it started, with no further sign by dusk. Quite an elusive bird!

2 adult ROSEATE TERNS; one unringed bird on beach in front of NOA seawatching area with group of Sandwich Terns c. 10:20-10:40am at least. Flushed by dog walkers several times, so subject to much disturbance, but continued to return to the beach during this time period at least (S.A.B.) One bird ringed on both legs present late afternoon near the main Thornham channel before being pushed into the main Sandwich Tern roost near Thornham by the tide.

RED-THROATED PIPIT flew west over the NOA and called twice.
2+ ICTERINE WARBLERS, 1 in the dense hedge in the north corner of the beach road public carpark near the toliet block, by the 'alternative route to beach' sign and 1+ originally on the NOA reserve but later in the isolated sallows and willow opposite the NOA carpark adjacent to the dense patch of buckthorn (and sometimes flying into this). Late news from 15/4/08

Uncomfirmed report of a singing IBERIAN CHIFFCHAFF at Thornham. From the coastroad take the turning just west of Thornham Village towards the Lifeboat Pub, go straight over at the next junction and continue down narrow lane towards Thornham Harbour. Park at Thornham Harbour by barn and walk back towards the village. Bird was along this narrow lane, in open area behind tall hedge on right as you are facing back towards the coastroad at c. 9:30am. The observer was unsure of the birds ID at first as the song was so distinctly different but he has since listened to CDS and other software and is cofindent of the identification, as is a second observer, who had good views of the bird. Although it was only singing briefly the observers believe it had all elements of the Iberian Chiffchaff song (B. Anderson).

3 Redstarts in the paddocks today (C.D.R et. al.). 2 (1 male, 1 female) in the eastern-most paddock near the large house and an elusive female near the bridge.

2 Tree Pipits, 1 west over the bunkers (C.D.R) and one in garden of large house near eastern-most paddock (D. Norgate)
7 Tree Sparrows, 1 east past Gore Point early morning and 6 in paddocks (C.D.R et. al.)

GREAT-GREY SHRIKE reported, dropped into the 'dell' on the NOA reserve late afternoon and then flew back into the pines.
